Post-Conviction Support
Organisations that work with people challenging convictions or dealing with their consequences
Conviction does not end the process for everyone. For people who maintain their innocence, for those navigating the appeal process, and for those trying to understand what the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission can offer, specialist support exists.
Organisations
The SCCRC is the independent public body that reviews potential miscarriages of justice in Scotland. It can refer cases back to the appeal court where it believes a miscarriage of justice may have occurred. Applications are free and there is no time limit. It is the last formal avenue within the Scottish system for people who have exhausted the normal appeal process.
MOJO Scotland supports individuals who maintain their innocence after conviction, including those in custody and after release. It provides practical support, assistance navigating the post-conviction landscape, and advocacy for people whose cases raise concerns about the safety of their conviction.
Justice for Innocent Men Scotland is an organisation dedicated to supporting men in Scotland who have been falsely accused of sexual offences. Its focus is on the lack of fair trials in these cases and its work includes supporting individuals, raising awareness, and campaigning for reform.
Next Chapter Scotland supports people and families affected by criminal records or investigations. It helps with practical issues including employment, disclosure and the consequences of having a criminal record, offering clear and non-judgmental guidance and support.
Unlock is a national charity for people with convictions. It provides information and support on the practical consequences of having a criminal record including employment, insurance, travel and disclosure. Although based in England and Wales much of its guidance is relevant to people in Scotland.
